A deficiency in Vitamin B12 can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, memory loss, or difficulty concentrating. Additionally, one in three individuals in the Netherlands has a Vitamin D deficiency. Optimal Vitamin D levels are crucial for the immune system, calcium absorption, and muscle function. Regular testing of your Vitamin B12 and D levels is, therefore, beneficial.

Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, plays a role in various processes within the body. The functioning of the nervous system, synthesis of fatty acids, production of red blood cells, and the immune system may encounter issues in the presence of a Vitamin B12 deficiency. We obtain Vitamin B12 through our diet, primarily from the consumption of animal products such as meats, eggs, fish, and dairy. Approximately 50% of the Vitamin B12 intake is absorbed by the body, with the liver storing 2 to 5 milligrams as a reserve.
A deficiency in Vitamin B12 can lead to various symptoms, including:
- Fatigue
- Concentration difficulties
- Irritability
- Muscle pain
- Muscle cramps
- Loss of appetite
- Tingling sensations
- Joint issues
- Anemia due to a shortage of red blood cells
A healthy Vitamin D level is crucial for the immune system, the absorption of calcium from food, and the proper functioning of muscles.
A deficiency in Vitamin D can manifest in the following symptoms:
- Chronic fatigue
- Joint and muscle pain
- Lethargy
- Sensitive or bleeding gums
- Cramps or muscle tremors
- Prolonged deficiency in older individuals may lead to osteoporosis or muscle weakness
The severity of symptoms can vary, and they may not always be present. -
Vegetarians and vegans face an increased risk of B12 deficiency due to limited or lack of intake of animal-based foods, and in such cases, supplementation with B12 may be recommended. A deficiency in B12 is also common among the elderly. This is often attributed to a decrease in stomach acid production as one ages, preventing proper dissociation of Vitamin B12 from protein. Additionally, gastrointestinal infections such as Crohn's disease can lead to reduced B12 absorption due to impaired intrinsic factor function. Certain medications, such as acid-suppressing drugs, may also hinder the effective absorption of Vitamin B12 in the body.
-
When the body is under increased demand, such as during stressful periods, additional Vitamin B12 is required. The heightened activity in our bodies during stress necessitates more Vitamin B12 for the proper functioning of all processes. Due to this increased demand, there is a greater risk of a B12 deficiency, especially during prolonged periods of stress or when following a dietary pattern insufficient for the recommended daily intake, such as a vegetarian diet. In such cases, maintaining adequate Vitamin B12 levels can be achieved with supplements.

Many people describe the sensation as a slight sting or pinch when the skin is pricked. It's tolerable and brief.
